Singapore Math 8 Step Model Drawing is a visual approach used in Pre-K – 6th grade to solve word problems from simple addition to rates, ratios, and percentages. The model (which can solve roughly 80% of all story problems) helps students organize information and solve problems in a step-by-step process. It is part of the highly-successful Singapore Math program.

Scott Foresman Envision 2009 series is used in K-6th grade, and includes a textbook and on-line version so assignments can be accessed from home. It’s a daily problem-based, interactive program that helps students use visual learning strategies to deepen their understanding of mathematical concepts. Take a digital tour of the new program by going to http://pearsonschool.com/, then under “Find A Product,” select “Scott Foresman Addison Wesley enVisionMATH - 2009." Click on the enVisionMATH program grade level(s) you’d like to view.

"Book Talk" is a new program where students learn how to critically review a book.

“Kids Pick Page” is a new link on our Learning Center website where students can recommend books to their peers. (Our library has over 13,000 book titles.)

Great Books® is a program taught by trained, volunteer parents to students in grades 4-8 in the Spring. The program reinforces and expands upon essential literacy skills — thinking critically, listening intently, and speaking and writing persuasively – by reading collections of classic and modern short stories. The program also focuses on “shared inquiry,” where students ask and answer questions of fact, interpretation, and evaluation through short writing assignments. Students receive a letter grade for Great Books on their report cards, which counts toward Honor Roll.

Accelerated Reader Program is software the school uses to encourage students to read. Students choose books at appropriate reading levels and read at their own pace. Upon completion of the book, students take a short, on-line quiz to monitor their reading and vocabulary growth.

To motivate students, each book is worth a certain number of points. When a student has accumulated 20 or more points, their name is placed in the "school newsletter and their photo goes on the "AR recognition wall" at school. In addition, students get to redeem their points for small prizes at the “AR” Store every month. Top AR readers for each grade are also recognized at the end-of-the-year awards ceremony.

Visual Arts is offered once a week for 30 minutes to students in K-8. One of the most important aspects of this program is to ensure students know there is no wrong way to express art, and that everyone has an ability to be creative. In a studio setting, students learn to appreciate and recognize the various art forms (including nature and architecture); study the styles and techniques of important artists; receive instruction on the basic elements and principles of design; and gain hands-on art experience through painting, drawing, sculpture, chalk, collage, ink, and other mediums.

Perpetual Adoration Chapel, also known as “Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Perpetual Adoration Chapel,” was started at St. Philomena in 1994. Our Eucharistic Lord is exposed in Monstrance in the chapel 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Every minute of every day someone is in the chapel praying. It is a wonderful way to spend a quiet hour with the Lord. If you wish to visit the chapel or sign up for an hour, contact Harry or Georgette Williams at (309) 745-9393 or the rectory at (309) 682-8642.
